Arkona
and Area Residents Partnering for Community Revitalisation!
by Mary Ellen Edlington
“
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in
having new eyes. ” These words of Marcel Proust, a french novelist, penned
over a century ago hold true for the Businesses and Residents of Arkona and
the surrounding area. In a series of community meetings over the last 3 months,
the residents of Arkona have been invited to share and explore ideas that will
shape the direction of this picturesque, historical, orchard community for
years to come.
Judy McLellan, secretary for the Arkona and Area Business
Association and Aaron Edlington, a Rural Development Officer with the
Foundation for Rural Living have taken the lead in organizing the community
meetings which have been held at different venues throughout the community;
Rock Glen Family Resort, The Utter Farm and the Senior’s Hall.
The response has been excellent, positive and energizing. Jan Lucas,
a resident of the community for 38 years (a “new-comer” by
some standards), with family ties that go back even further, has appreciated
the meetings as an excellent opportunity to meet even “newer” residents
and has been amazed at the number of volunteers and people wanting
to get involved. Sue and Roy Hartman, owners of the Utter Farm - recently
featured in the Sarnia Observer - have guests from all over North America
and have been told by many visitors that “Arkona is a treasure
just waiting to be discovered”.
The goal is to raise awareness, foster cooperation
and establish a volunteer Strategic Planning Committee that will help
lead Arkona into the future, affirming the vision of being “Stewards
of our heritage, cultivators of our future”. As part of this
proactive approach to growth and development, volunteers have been
canvassing the community sharing the vision behind the meetings and
soliciting feedback in the form of a community survey. Information
gathered from the surveys will inform the goals and objectives undertaken
by the planning committee and its subcommittees. The Strategic Plan
will look at the following growth areas for the community: Business/Economic,
Health/Environment, Social/Cultural, Education, Beautification, and
Eco-Tourism.
